2. Arkansas MLK Commission, Daisy Bates House Museum Foundation to Host Annual Back-to-School Giveaway

In partnership with the Daisy Bates House Museum Foundation, the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host its annual Back-to-School Giveaway at 11 a.m. August 6, 2025, at the historic Daisy Bates House Museum, located at 1207 W. 28th St., Little Rock.
This community outreach event provides free school supplies to youth and families as they prepare for the academic year. Supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and children must be present to receive items.
“As a member of the national Statuary Hall Steering Committee, it is an honor to host this outreach along with Mr. Charles King and other fellow members of the committee,” DuShun Scarbrough, the commission’s executive director, said. “There will be several educational components including a tour of Daisy Bates’ Home and Museum, and members of the committee who knew her will be on hand to interact with youth and families.”
“We are equally proud to carry on the legacy of Dr. King and Daisy Bates by uplifting our youth through education and service,” Scarbrough said. “Events like this promote unity, hope, and opportunities for all.”
The commission invites volunteers to assist with supply distribution, greeting families, and creating a welcoming environment for attendees.

| ABOUT THE AMEN CORNER |
| For years, Sister Margaret Alexander has moved her Harlem congregation with a mixture of personal charisma and ferocious piety. But when Margaret’s estranged husband, a scapegrace jazz musician, comes home to die, she is in danger of losing both her standing in the church and the son she has tried to keep on the godly path.In his first work for the theater, James Baldwin brings all the fervor and majestic rhetoric of the storefront churches of his childhood along with an unwavering awareness of the price those churches exacted from their worshipers. “The Amen Corner” is a play about faith and family, about the gulf between Black men and Black women, and Black fathers and Black sons. It is a scalding, uplifting, sorrowful, and exultant masterpiece of the modern American theatre. Read the book before you see the play! Presented by the Arkansas Repertory Theatre August 5th – 17th |
