10. Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing Hosts Book Signing & Discussion with “Lewis & Lillie: Because They Met” Author Jesse Gatewood

Jesse Gatewood’s life growing up in the Arkansas Delta during the mid-1900s was unsurprisingly complex with many African Americans fighting to overcome blatant racism and discrimination. This book chronicles some key moments in Jesse’s life that propelled him to attain success during early to late adulthood amidst tumultuous times while starting out at an academic disadvantage without access to quality education. Jesse shares his story about growing up as a son to Lewis and Lillie and the impact they had on his life, along with the abundance of influential individuals–like Coach Chandler–who helped him to objectively choose his path.

JESSE GATEWOOD was born the oldest of nine to Lewis and Lillie Pearl Gatewood. His father pulled the family from a sharecropper’s existence to living “in town,” where his mother was a hairdresser. Gatewood graduated from the segregated George Washington Carver High School in Lonoke and attended Grambling College in Louisiana (now Grambling State University), where he earned a degree in health and physical education.
