3. Arkansas Cinema Society and Women’s Foundation of Arkansas Announce Its 4th Annual Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls Program

ACS is teaming up with the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas-Girls of Promise initiative (WFA) and JM Associates again this year for the fourth annual Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls, meeting in person during July 2022. Participants must be an Arkansas resident between the ages of 16 and 18, have transportation to and from the Lab, and provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination by the start of the program.

Applications to join the free, immersive Lab will be available on the ACS website through March 1, 2022. After submitting an application through the ACS website, those selected will be asked to participate in a phone or Zoom interview prior to acceptance into the program.

The Filmmaking Lab for Teen Girls is taught by working film professionals and gives young women a chance to be fully immersed in the filmmaking experience. By providing a hands-on environment, ACS offers a safe space for girls to take on leadership roles traditionally held by men on film sets. Students will learn a range of on set jobs including screenwriting, cinematography, editing, set dressing, costume design, lighting, and sound recording.

Students will use skills learned from their mentors to write and produce a short film that will be screened at Filmland, ACS’s annual four-day celebration of cinema. Past students from the Lab have even had the opportunity for a private Q+A session with writer Lucy Alibar, Bert of directing duo Bert & Bertie, and award-winning actor and producer, Jessica Chastain!
