2. Arkansas MLK Commission to Host Nonviolence Event

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host a nonviolence event for youth at 1 p.m. June 6, 2025, at the Boys and Girls Club of Faulkner County, 1405 Robins Street, Conway.

This event will promote Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Six Principles of Nonviolence. The principles provide a framework for peaceful change in neighborhoods. Attendees will wear orange to commemorate National Gun Violence Prevention Day.

“We believe that change begins with our youth and community, and nonviolence is not just a principle — it’s a way of life,” DuShun Scarbrough, the commission’s executive director, said. “This program is about unity, Dr. King’s nonviolence principles, and teaching youth to take steps toward a more peaceful future.”

North Little Rock Police Officer Tommy Norman — nationally known for his deep community roots and compassionate policing — will serve as the keynote speaker. His voice and presence will amplify the message about the importance of healing, unity, and nonviolence.

The event, which is open to the public, also will include reflections from community leaders, a moment of silence in honor of victims, and a commemorative balloon release of orange balloons to honor victims of violence.
