The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission hosts Nonviolence Youth Summit in Blytheville, Arkansas
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will continue the “Delta Experience” by hosting the 2022 Nonviolence Youth Summit, October 28, 2022, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, 600 North 10th Street, Blytheville High School, Blytheville, Arkansas 72315. The event is free and open to the public. Special guests include Miss Arkansas 2022 Ebony Mitchell and Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of civil rights icons, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Yoni and Solai Wicker, The Wicker Twinz, social media influencers. This event falls on the heels of the 30th anniversary of the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and the 40th Anniversary of the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host the following activities in conjunction with the event:
- 10:00 AM -2:00 PM Nonviolence Youth Summit- Breakout Sessions
- Keynote Session will begin at 1:00 PM, and will feature Miss Arkansas 2022, Ebony Mitchell. There will be a candlelight vigil honoring victims of violence, presentation from “Victory Over Violence,” and a “passing of the torch” ceremony from the older generation to the younger generation, Blytheville High School, Chickasaw Arena.
- 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM – Book Signing Event promoting literacy with Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and Dr. Kimberly Johnson, Authors of the children’s book, “It Starts with Me.” More than three hundred youth will meet Dr. Bernice A. King and receive a free copy of the new book which promotes diversity, love, and acceptance.
- 11:00 AM- Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Announcement of Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission partnership with the Mississippi Chamber of Commerce to promote economic development
“The Civil Rights Legacy”
The Commission will honor “living witnesses to history” and descendants of civil rights champions who are sharing their rich legacies with the next generation of leaders at an awards ceremony. The recipients will also interact with students in breakout sessions prior to the ceremony.
Donzaleigh Abernathy– Actress, Author of the book, “Partners in History.” Ms. Abernathy is the daughter of Reverend Ralph Abernathy, close friend and mentor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sara Collins Rudolph– Known as “The Fifth Girl,” Ms. Rudolph is a survivor of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing in Birmingham, Alabama that killed her sister, Addie Mae Collins, and four other girls in September of 1963.
Dr. Angela Shuttlesworth- Granddaughter of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, who was a co-founder of the South Christian Leadership Conference and played a significant role in the civil rights movement while working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mother Annie Abrams– Educator, Mentor to the “Little Rock Nine,” the first African American students to integrate Little Rock Central High School
The Integration of Blytheville High School– the Commission will honor students who participated in the integration of Blytheville High School in 1970.
